Remove metadata from a PDF

Drop a PDF to see what it says about who made it — the author, the software, when it was written and edited — then strip all of it in one click. Pages and text stay as they are. Free, in your browser: the file never leaves your device.

100% local — the PDF never leaves your device.

How it works

  1. Drop or pick a PDF — a contract, a CV, a report, an invoice.

  2. See what it says about who made it: author, software, dates, keywords and hidden XMP blocks. Everything is read on your device.

  3. Remove all of it in one click and download the clean PDF. Pages, text, links and forms are kept as they are.

What a PDF gives away

Word processors and PDF printers fill in fields you never see. They travel with the file:

  • Who wrote it

The Author field is usually your name, or your computer's account name, filled in automatically from Word, Pages or Google Docs.

  • What made it

The app and its version, sometimes the operating system — enough to tell a company's internal template from a client's.

  • When it was written

Creation and modification dates, to the second, even for a document sent weeks later.

  • What came before

A PDF edited and saved in some apps keeps earlier versions inside the file, old author and all.

Sending a CV, a contract or a report to someone outside your organisation? Check what it says before it goes.

What is removed, and what is kept

Removed: the whole document information dictionary (title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, dates and any custom field), every XMP metadata block in the file, application private data, the document ID, the author and dates of every comment, the dates of attached files, any digital signature with the signer's details, and earlier saved versions still inside the file. The new PDF is read again before you can download it.

Kept: every page as it was — text stays selectable and searchable, fonts, images, links, bookmarks, comments, attachments and form fields are copied as they are. What is written on the pages themselves is not metadata and is not touched: to hide that, redact the PDF.

Nothing is uploaded

The PDF is read and rewritten by code running in this tab. There is no server it is sent to, which matters for exactly the documents that carry metadata worth removing.

Need to hide something on the pages too? Redact the PDF — its export carries no metadata either.

Sending photos? Remove photo metadata — location and phone model live in images too.

Share your screen, not your data

The DataBlur extension blurs emails, names and numbers on the live page before a screen share or recording picks them up.

FAQ

Information stored in the file besides the pages: usually the author's name, the app that made it, creation and modification dates, a title and keywords, and XMP blocks that can repeat all of these. PDF readers show it under Document Properties, and anyone with the file can read it.

No. The pages, their text, fonts, images, links and form fields are kept. The text stays selectable and searchable; nothing is turned into an image.

Drop the PDF here and press Remove all metadata: the author field goes, along with every other information field and the XMP blocks that often repeat the author's name.

No. Text on the pages is content, not metadata. To black out names, numbers or signatures on the pages, use the redact PDF tool.

Not while it is protected: the file has to be rewritten, and an encrypted PDF can't be without its password. Remove the password in the app that made it, then clean it here.

Free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many PDFs you clean. Each file can be up to 100 MB.
