How to blur faces in Canva

TL;DR: Photos, yes. Video, no. Canva can blur a face in a photo, but its Help Center states plainly that the Blur tool isn't available for video designs. In a Canva video you cover the face instead: a shape or sticker, timed to the right stretch and, if the person moves, animated along a path you draw. That holds up for a face that stays put. For anyone moving it gets clumsy, and Canva has no face tracking. If you want a real blur on video, run the clip through DataBlur's free blur-video tool first and bring the result into Canva.

Lots of reels, social posts and event recaps start life in Canva. So when a clip turns out to include someone who shouldn't be identifiable, Canva is the obvious first stop. The snag is that Canva is a design tool at heart, and blurring a moving face is video-editing work.

What follows covers what Canva can do today for photos and for video, plus the point where it makes sense to reach for something else.

Blurring a face in a Canva photo

This part is easy. Canva's Blur photos help article walks through it:

  1. Select the photo in your design
  2. Click Edit in the editor toolbar
  3. Go to Tools, then See all and choose Blur
  4. Pick the Brush tab. Set the Brush size and Intensity, then drag over the face
  5. Went too far? The Remove brush brings that area back

Turn the intensity up and cover the whole face, hair and ears included if they're distinctive. A soft blur over a familiar face often still reads as that person.

Don't want to paint by hand? DataBlur's face blur for photos is a free browser tool built for exactly this.

How to blur a face in a Canva video

This is where things change. The same help article says the Blur tool works on flat images like PNGs and JPGs and "isn't available for video designs." So on video, you hide the face rather than blur it.

If the person stays in one place

  1. Open your video design and pause on the first frame where the face appears
  2. From Elements, add a shape (a circle or rounded rectangle works) or a sticker. A solid fill hides more than a semi-transparent one
  3. Resize it and move it over the face, leaving some margin
  4. Set when it shows: select the shape, open More, choose Show element timing, then drag the handles so it covers the face for as long as the face is on screen
  5. Play it back and adjust

That's plenty for a seated speaker, someone in the background of a locked-off shot or a face on a poster behind you.

If the person moves

Canva doesn't track anything, so you approximate the motion. You have two options:

  • Animate the shape along a path. Select the shape, click Animate, then Create an Animation and drag the shape along the route the face takes. Click Done to save. Canva's animation help article caps each animation at 10 seconds
  • Break it into still segments. Use several copies of the shape, each sitting over the face in one position and timed to the stretch where the person holds roughly still

Both involve guesswork. The path follows your mouse, not the person, so expect to replay and redraw it a few times before it lines up.

Where the Canva method breaks down

It's worth being clear about the limits:

  • Cover-ups only, no blur. A black circle or an emoji over a face protects privacy just fine, but it doesn't look like a blur. If your brand wants a soft blur on video, Canva can't produce one
  • No face detection or tracking. You spot every face and you follow it. Miss someone in the back row and they stay visible
  • Movement is drawn by hand. Paths come from your mouse and top out at 10 seconds per animation. A kid running around a playground won't stay covered
  • Each face multiplies the work. Three moving people means three shapes, each with its own path or set of segments
  • Your footage lives in Canva's cloud. Uploads are stored in your Canva account and count toward your storage. Normal for Canva, but worth a thought if the footage is sensitive

For one person who barely moves, the cover-up approach is quick and does the job. Use it. For anything busier, handle the faces before the clip reaches Canva.

The faster way: faces found and tracked for you

DataBlur's blur-video covers the part Canva can't. Open it in Chrome, Edge or recent Safari and load a clip of up to 3 minutes:

  • It tracks the faces through the video
  • You untick anyone who should stay visible
  • You download an MP4 with the original sound

The clip is processed on your own computer. Nothing is uploaded, and there's no sign-up or watermark. It costs nothing.

It can miss a face shown in profile or mostly covered, so play the result through once before you use it. It handles faces only, not license plates or text.

The simple workflow: blur the faces in DataBlur, upload the blurred MP4 to Canva, then add text, music and brand elements as usual. Hiding details in screenshots for the same post? Our guide on how to blur a screenshot covers that.

Before you publish

  • Watch the whole video at full size, not just the thumbnail preview
  • Check the first and last frames of every cover-up shape. Start a frame late and the face flashes on screen
  • Look for the same person in other scenes, not only the clip you fixed
  • Scan reflections, framed photos and screens in the background
  • Make sure name badges, uniforms and captions don't give the person away anyway
  • Play the downloaded MP4 once more before posting

FAQ

Can you blur a face in a Canva video?

Not with a blur effect. Canva's Blur tool is for photos and isn't available for video designs. You can cover the face with a shape or sticker, or blur the clip first with a tool like DataBlur's blur-video and then import it.

How do I make a shape follow a face in Canva?

Select the shape, click Animate, choose Create an Animation and drag the shape along the face's path. You draw it by hand and each animation maxes out at 10 seconds, so it only suits simple, slow movement.

How do I blur a face in a photo in Canva?

Select the photo, click Edit, go to Tools, then See all, then Blur. Use the Brush tab to paint over the face and turn up the Intensity.

Does Canva have automatic face blur?

No, not built in. For videos, DataBlur's blur-video tracks and blurs faces for free. For photos, DataBlur's blur-face blurs faces in the browser.

Is it safe to upload private footage to Canva?

Canva is a cloud service, so anything you upload is stored in your account. If you'd rather keep the original footage on your machine, blur the faces locally first. DataBlur's blur-video runs in your browser with no upload.
